Find the Pocket: The Goldilocks Theory
Have you ever set your goals just right? That is what I like to call ‘finding the pocket’. That place where you are pushing yourself but are still comfortable enough to keep going.
We all know the story. When Goldilocks sat down to eat some porridge, the first one was too hot, the second too cold, and the third one was just right. According to Nasa The Goldilocks zone is that sweet spot Earth sits in that harbors life. Not too hot, not too cold, but just right. It is Earths placement in moderation that makes it so.
Finding the pocket is just like Goldilocks, you have to find what is "just right" for you. 100% is too hot, you will never meet your goals 100% of the time, there is no room for mistakes or real life. 29% is too cold. It is hard to change much if you don't push a little harder than that. Atleast 51% of the time is just right. How far we push past that 51% is different for everyone. That's wear you have to find your own personal pocket where you "harbor life," pushing hard enough to create change, but not so hard you give up.
When we push too hard and set our goals too high we are extinguishing life…our life. It is not weakness, but wisdom when we set our goals in the pocket. We need to learn to find the pocket and ask yourself if you have the key ingredient – moderation.
Finding the pocket includes setting a goal, cutting it down to 51% and then adding until you find the pocket.
Running 6 days a week is measurable, but it is too hot like Venus, not Earth. This is where the 51% kicks in. Take that 6 days and bring it down to at least 51% of that. So in order to make it small the goal would be running 3-4 days a week instead of 6. Now of course there is no penalty if you run 5 or 6 days a week, but that is icing. It is not expected. It doesn’t extinguish life in the sense that it crushes your spirit when you set a goal of 6 days a week and often cannot complete it. 3-4 days a week would be more reasonable and it is measurable and it is in the pocket that will support life.
Remember, everyone’s pocket will be different. If you used to run marathons and are trying to return to running, then running 3-4 days a week could be reasonable. If you have never run before in your life then maybe that is too high of a goal and the pocket for you is 1-2 times a week. There is no right or wrong, the pocket is where you will thrive like Earth.
Just as the Earth needs to be within a certain temperature to grow and thrive. So do you. Using the 51% principle you can find the pocket and get your self to the Goldilocks zone where you will encourage growth and happiness.
